ABOUT SMILE SURGERY

Small incision lenticule extraction (SMILE) is the newest type of surgery that uses the femtosecond laser technology for treatment of myopia and astigmatism refractive errors. Using the most modern femtosecond laser device, the middle layer of the cornea is precisely incised 3 to 3.5 mm in diameter and then removed. In this procedure, the most important layer of the cornea, which has the most important role in its strength, is kept intact. Due to lesser incision of corneal nerves in this method compared to femtoLASIK, PRK, and LASEK surgeries, dry eye complications that usually occure in the first 3 months is reduced. In addition, the procedure is without pain and eye watering and the patient is recovered and can return to social activities from the day after the operation. This is the first and best choice for all patients with myopia and astigmatism, especially for those with thin corneas. The femtosecond device operates at a frequency of 500 kHz, and its features include the least amount of energy entering the cornea, the least increase in intraocular pressure, curved PI, and smart bed. This method can also be used to create flaps and tunnels for intraocular rings and corneal transplants. However, the device’s unique feature is the ability to perform SMILE surgery, known as the least invasive treatment for myopia and astigmatism.
